How to Rebuild an Atomizer: The Beginner’s Guide
If you are reading this tutorial then you are toying with the idea of rebuilding an atomizer and to that I say, “Go for it!” Anyone can successfully rebuild an atomizer with the proper tools, information and a little practice. I know it sounds complicated and intimidating but it really is easier than you think and definitely worth your time. Rebuilding an atomizer is basically just a coil made from wrapping a wire around a wick that is secured between two posts (positive and negative), which power up the battery, which heats the eLiquid and turns it into vapor. Voila! Until you try it you won’t know just how easy it can be.
It is best to start with a basic coil, like the one I’m going to show you, but before you get started you need to do a little prep work by disassembling and cleaning your atomizer and then gathering these materials:
- Rebuildable atomizer (of course)
- Nail clippers
- Tweezers or pair of needle nose pliers
- Paper clip, safety pin or nail
- 4” – 6” length of whatever gauge Kanthal wire you prefer. 32 gauge is a good place to start, which is what we are using.
- 2” length of wick of your choice. Silica wick or Ekowool is good, but we are using silica wick for this tutorial.
- Precision screwdriver (you can find in any sunglass/eyeglass repair kit)
Lets get started! And remember, don’t overthink things. For this tutorial, we will be making a coil with four to five wraps of Kanthal wire.
First, take your wick and fold it in half. Then, take your straightened paper clip and place it right next to the wick, which will give you something stable to wrap your wire around.
Take your wire and wrap it around the wick four to five times. Make sure to leave some wire on both ends of your coil so you can attach it to your atomizer. Once the coil is wrapped to your liking, remove the paper clip and pull the coil a little tighter around the wick, using the tweezers. Check that each wrap has about the same spacing and are not touching.
Next, loosen the posts of your atomizer, enough so there is sufficient post showing to wrap the end of your wire around. Then, attach the coil to the posts of your atomizer and don’t worry about excess wire sticking out; you can trim it later. It is a good idea to wrap with the direction the post screws back in.
Now tighten down the posts with your screwdriver. As you screw in the posts it will start to tighten the coil against them, which is ok because you don’t want extra space between your coil and posts. Your coil is now almost ready.
Then test your coil using an ohm meter. This coil should be about 2.0 ohms (it doesn’t have to be exact), depending on the wire gauge you chose and how tightly you wrapped it.
Last thing to do is screw your RBA onto your mod and fire it at a low/medium voltage, making sure to only hold the fire button down long enough to ensure it’s working properly. The coil should heat up and turn red from the middle and move outward, which means your coil is good! Now you can drip/add your favorite juice and vape away!
If it doesn’t heat up from the middle you probably didn’t wrap it evenly or one side is tighter to the post. No need to worry if that is the case, just gently adjust the evenness/tightness with your tweezers. If the coil is not heating up at all then either the resistance is too low (add another wrap to your coil – more wraps equals more resistance) for your device or the coil is not making contact with both posts (secure your coil to the posts again).

24g = 0.18 ohms/inch
26g = 0.29 ohms/inch
28g = 0.46 ohms/inch
30g = 0.72 ohms/inch
32g = 1.14 ohms/inch
34g = 1.76 ohms/inch
The lower the ohms per inch, the more wraps you will need, this can be a trade off as the thinner wire needs less wraps but also has less surface contact to the liquid.
